RAIC Honorary Membership

Honorary Membership is to recognize individuals who have given valuable and distinguished service to the architectural profession, and upheld the objectives and values of the RAIC, including support and advancement of equity, diversity and inclusion. It is generally awarded to individuals who would not qualify for regular Membership. Honorary Members may include people working with architectural organizations, architectural schools, allied professionals, academics, and others. The nomination period is open annually. The next call for submissions will take place in the Fall of 2024.

RAIC Research & Innovation in Architecture Award

The RAIC Research & Innovation in Architecture Award recognizes an architect, architectural practice and/or academic researcher who has demonstrated excellence in research and/or innovation in architectural practice, technology, or pedagogy. It celebrates initiatives that advance professional practice and/or disciplinary knowledge, and considers exemplary approaches to sustainability, as well as the support and advancement of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

RAIC Architectural Journalism and Media Award

The RAIC Architectural Journalism and Media Award recognizes an architect, architectural practice or individual that presents a narrative about architecture which promotes public understanding and awareness of architecture, the role of architects and their impacts on society, and/or the value of design and design excellence. The entry can range from a single significant contribution to a collection of work. Any individual or collective of individuals is eligible for this award.

RAIC Advocate for Architecture Award

The RAIC Advocate for Architecture Award celebrates an individual, or collective of individuals, who has acted as a public champion for the advancement of Canadian architecture through their advocacy, patronage, and/or other forms of support. Candidates may include clients or patrons, educators, public servants, architects, allied professionals and others. It considers exemplary approaches to sustainability, as well as the support and advancement of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Awards of Excellence

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada issues a call for submissions for the Awards of Excellence every two years (on odd years). Advocate for Architecture Innovation in Architecture Allied Arts Medal President’s Award for Multimedia Representations of Architecture Green Building The next call for submissions will take place in Fall 2022. Governor General’s Medals in Architecture

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and the Canada Council for the Arts (CCA) are pleased to invite architects to participate in the competition for the Governor General’s Medals in Architecture. The RAIC is proud to organize and administer the competition. The Canada Council for the Arts is responsible for selecting and administering the peer assessment committee. The objective of the Governor General’s Medals in Architecture is to recognize and celebrate outstanding design in recently completed built projects of any size, type and geographical location by Canadian architects.

National Urban Design Awards

Urban design plays an important role in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Canadian communities. The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, Canadian Institute of Planners, and the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects—in cooperation with Canadian municipalities—work closely to promote awareness of that role. In 2006, the three organizations established the National Urban Design Awards program to recognize individuals, organizations, firms, and projects in Canada that have contributed to the quality of life and the sustainability of Canadian communities.

RAIC Gold Medal

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s Gold Medal is the highest honour that the Institute can bestow in recognition of a significant and lasting contribution to Canadian architecture. The honour recognizes a significant body of work demonstrated through either excellence in design, research, education, advocacy or other activities with a direct impact on the advancement of architecture in Canada.
