In partnership with the RAIC, Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) has officially announced the six teams whose designs will move onto the next stage of the architectural design competition to redevelop Block 2, one of the most prominent city blocks in the country. Block 2 faces Parliament Hill to the north and is the threshold to city life to the south. 

The following teams will advance to stage 2 of the competition: 

• Diamond Schmitt Architects (Toronto, Canada) in joint venture with Bjarke Ingels Group (New York, United States), KWC Architects (Ottawa, Canada) and ERA Architects (Toronto, Canada) 

• NEUF Architects (Ottawa, Canada) in joint venture with Renzo Piano Building Workshop (Paris, France) 

• Provencher Roy + Associés Architectes Inc. (Montréal, Canada) 

• Watson MacEwen Teramura Architects (Ottawa, Canada) in joint venture with Behnisch Architekten (Boston, United States) 

• Wilkinson Eyre (London, United Kingdom) in association with IDEA Inc. (Ottawa, Canada) 

• Zeidler Architecture Inc. (Toronto, Canada) in association with David Chipperfield Architects (London, United Kingdom) 

The RAIC and PSPC will continue to work closely with the Senate of Canada, the House of Commons, the Library of Parliament, the Parliamentary Protective Service and other outside stakeholders such as the City of Ottawa, the National Capital Commission (NCC), and the Federal Heritage Buildings Review Office to revitalize the Parliamentary Precinct. The next stage of the Design Competition is expected to begin in early 2022.

Become a RAIC Subject Matter Expert!

The RAIC is seeking a volunteer professional advisor to participate in the process of administering many of the RAIC’s Awards. The volunteer professional advisor is a licensed or formerly licensed architect, or a current or retired member of faculty in a college/university architecture program who acts as a fairness monitor and represents the interests of the submitters/candidates in a neutral manner throughout the jurying process. 

The Professional Advisor is supported by RAIC staff who take the primary responsibility for organizing, convening, and managing award submissions and jury meetings; and by the RAIC Awards Advisory Committee, which takes the primary responsibility for identifying jurors and advising on the structure of the awards. The Professional Advisor is an ex-officio, non-voting member of the RAIC Awards Advisory Committee. 

Eligibility: RAIC members in good standing who are licensed or formerly licensed architect, or a current or retired member of faculty in a college/university architecture program.

The RAIC is committed to equity and justice as well as inclusion across race, colour, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability and age and encourages anyone interested in the Honours and Awards Program to apply.  

The Universal Design Network of Canada (UDNC) is interested in filling a vacant position on our board of directors in the capacity of Architect. Our board consists of four “pillars” of knowledge representing designers, people with lived experience, the field of ergonomics, and health / wellness. As a member of the board, you would be responsible for meeting, at minimum, twice a year using remote technology such as Zoom. The board member might also act as a “Liaison” between the UDNC and RAIC. 

The Universal Design Network of Canada is the only federally registered not for profit corporation dedicated to promoting universal design–and we accomplish this result through research, education, and displays of best practice.

The RAIC is calling for volunteers to join our advisory committee, which supports the RAIC continuing education program. If you are interested, complete an application before January 25, 2022. The key responsibility of the RAIC ConEd-AC is to serve as an advisory committee to the RAIC regarding the goals, objectives, and content of the continuing education program.

Keep the Climate Action and Architecture conversation going and help inform the development of the RAIC Climate Action Plan. Following a successful online Congress event on October 4, 2021, we are taking the conversations to the greater public, on a mission to capture diverse perspectives.

We are committed to hearing as many voices as possible including the voices of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples and equity-deserving populations.

Our facilitator guide and workbook has been developed to ensure you have a voice in the development of the RAIC Climate Action Plan. The workbook can be completed by anyone who is interested in providing input, whether you are an architect (retired and licensed), intern, student, allied professional, client, or member of the public. Facilitator Guide and Workbooks are available in English and French.

Workbooks must be submitted before February 28, 2022. All workbooks submitted before January 31,2022 are eligible to win a prize pack*.

*One prize pack consisting of up to six (6) RAIC continuing education vouchers for World Café participants will be awarded following a draw from registered World Café conversations. Maximum value of prize pack is $500.

We are pleased to announce that Gregory MacNeil has been appointed Vice President of Practice effective December 6, 2021. Gregory will serve as a key member of the senior leadership team (SLT) on operational decision-making and will be responsible for practice support and practice advocacy. The portfolio includes management of practice queries, maintenance and creation of standard agreement documents, maintenance of existing publications (e.g.Fee Guide, CHoP), leadership and management of the Practice Support Committee, advisor to RAIC continuing education as well as advocacy and representation on pan-professional committees including but not limited to the Federal Real Property Advisory Committee, Construction Industry Consultative Committee, and more.

NEW Vince Catalli Scholarship in Sustainable Design Innovation $5,000 – Deadline March 31, 2022  

The Vince Catalli Scholarship in Sustainable Design Innovation promotes and encourages innovative, practical, scalable, and transferable approaches to sustainable design among the next generation of architects in Canada. In addition to the cash prize, a $1,000 travel honorarium will be provided for the recipient to attend the RAIC Conference.

The Arts and Letters Club of Toronto Foundation’s Award for Architectural Conservation recognizes emerging heritage conservation practitioners and celebrates excellence, innovation, and best practices in the applied field of architectural conservation– while supporting an understanding of Canada’s built heritage.

The CAGBC Scholarship was established through an endowment from the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) to promote and encourage sustainable research and design in Canadian Schools of Architecture.

The Kiyoshi Matsuzaki Scholarship embodies the RAIC’s commitment to deserving students by promoting excellence and providing financial support to those whose demonstrated commitment to complete the RAIC Syllabus Program with the full intention of achieving professional registration through a Canadian Architectural Licensing Authority.

RAIC Foundation Bursary $2,500 – Deadline March 18, 2022 

The RAIC Foundation Bursary was established to support a project consistent with the RAIC Foundation’s mission to promote architecture in its broadest sense. The winning submission will be a project that encourages public education or enables significant scholarly research that results in publications, exhibitions, symposia, lectures, or conferences.

College of Fellows Centennial Fund for Intern/Intern Architect $5,000 – Deadline March 18, 2022. 

The College of Fellows Centennial Fund for Interns or Intern Architects was created with donations received from members of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada to support a deserving Intern or Intern Architect or group of Interns/Intern Architects wishing to promote the value and image of the profession.

The Summit of Architects, Urbanists and Designers ‘ArchEurasia 2021’ will be opened on December 13-15, 2021, as the final event of the XVI season of the International Prize for Architecture and Design ‘Eurasian Prize’.

Being distanced from the influence of ideologies and sectoral lobbying pressures, the “ArchEurasia” invites open and free discussion involving all stakeholders - architects, designers, urbanists, popular bloggers, cultural scientists, philosophers, sociologists, technology companies, academic and multidisciplinary institutions, public officials and social movements, as well as students and active citizens.

The focus of attention is the city as a constructor of the future. Discussions will take place in several directions: a city as a cultural landscape, a city and a healthy environment, a city of equal opportunities, a city of heritage, a city as a technology, a city as a design product, a city in motion and new urban mobility.

Anyone can take part in the events of the Summit of Architects, Urbanists and Designers ‘ArchEurasia 2021’. Registration is required.
