The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) invites submissions for the Emerging Architectural Practice Award, the Architectural Firm Award, the Prix du XXe Siècle, and the Emerging Architect Award.

The RAIC is also calling for nominations for the 2020 recipient of its highest honour, the Gold Medal.

The deadline for submissions is 12 a.m. EST, Friday, January 24, 2020. Applying is quick and easy with the RAIC’s NEW online RAIC awards platform.

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and the Canada Council for the Arts invite architects to participate in the competition for the 2020 Governor General’s Medals in Architecture.

Awarded every two years, the 12 medals recognize and celebrate outstanding design in recently completed built projects – big or small – by Canadian architects.

The Governor General’s Medals in Architecture are among this country’s most prestigious and coveted architectural awards.

Silke Stadtmueller is a graduate of the University of Applied Sciences, Karlsruhe, Germany with a degree in Architecture. She has worked in a number of architecture and multi-disciplinary design firms. During her schooling, she interned at Map Arquitectos in Barcelona, Spain, and Architekten Fabrik n#40 in Berlin, Germany. Immediately following graduation, she was employed as a web designer at redCOR AG in Bern, Switzerland.

Silke resumed her architectural career at idw Architekten, based in Neu-Ulm, as Project Architect for exhibit designs for DaimlerChrysler, Mercedes Benz, Voith Paper, and BMW/MINI/Rolls Royce, and the new headquarters for the Landeszentralbank in Chemnitz, Germany with MAP Arquitectos.

In 2005, Silke moved to Canada and joined Johnson Chou Inc. She was the Project Manager and Designer for numerous award-winning projects including advertising firm Grip Limited, Red Bull Canada, and private residences such as the Penthouse at the Candy Factory, 10 Bellair and 142 Kenilworth. Upscale retail boutiques and hospitality projects include 119 Corbo, Blowfish Restaurant, and Carnabys Bespoke Jewellery, a 2018 recipient of ARIDO and Interior Design magazine’s BOY award.

Her current projects include spatial rebranding of the historic Table Rock Welcome Centre at the precipice of the Horseshoe Falls, Niagara Falls, and multi-storey condominiums Sixty Colborne, 383 Sorauren and The Selby. Her commercial projects include offices for Acosta/Mosaic located in Chicago, SGSCO International, and showrooms in Toronto and New York for the Global Furniture Group.

Silke’s interdisciplinary skills, attention to detail, and modernist leanings have been instrumental over the past 14 years to define and refine the conceptual and aesthetic trajectory of Johnson Chou Inc.

Former RAIC president Sam Oboh recently visited Nigeria with AIA president William J. Bates. The purpose of the trip was to strengthen the relationship between the Nigerian Institute of Architects, the AIA and the RAIC–and to improve the building industry in the country.

The University of Calgary has launched a new doctoral program for registered mid-career architects looking to expand the scope of their professional work. The Doctor of Design (DDes) program is open to professionalS with at least five years of work experience–and allows working architects the opportunity to pursue an intensive research-based Ph.D., where they can explore architectural-design through academia.

Architects can also continue their practice while studying–as DDes is structured to accommodate working professionals. Applications are now being accepted for the Fall 2020 program start; the deadline for applications is February 1, 2020.

The final day for submissions to the UIA Friendly and Inclusive Spaces Awards is November 30, 2019. The RAIC encourages members to submit projects– completed in the past three years–that are built with accessibility, inclusion, and openness in mind for consideration.

Winning projects exemplify the highest standards of universal and inclusive design and will be exhibited at the UIA Congress in Rio de Janerio in July 2020.

There will also be a special award presented to design-research that makes a significant contribution to the study of human-centric design.
