Construction Contract Administration and Field Review

An architect administers the construction contract on behalf of both the client and the contractor during construction through services known as Construction Administration and Field Review (CCA & FR). These services are those prescribed in standard construction contracts, such as the CCDC 2, and are divided into office functions and field functions. This course explores the theoretical and practical aspects in performing the CCA and FR, including preparations leading to this phase, as well as best practices.

This online course is built on the “Moodle” platform, a leading virtual learning environment that is widely used in education, training and learning course development fields. As a graduate level course for the RAIC Syllabus program, this entire course consists of several lesson units with their  own unit description page, discussion board forum, presentation folder, exercises folder, resource folder and assignments.

The University Graduate Course is a 12-week long course with a suggested completion time of one lesson unit each week. Each lesson unit will have up to three hours of guided learning content, going through course resources and lesson unit exercises. Please note that since this is an online course, students always have the flexibility to complete the lesson units at their own pace.

Project Risk Management

The course has been designed by drawing on bodies of knowledge of Risk Management, Project Management, and Architectural Practice.

A structure is then created that is relevant to architectural practice and outlines an easy to follow process for managing risk during projects.

What are the learning outcomes?

At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Develop and implement a CCA and FR system for an architectural project
• Compile and integrate CCA and FR activities described in Canadian forms of contract and the Architect’s role therein
• Evaluate existing and emergent construction communications systems
• Design and implement the forms of communication needed to manage CCA and FR, including appropriate forms and checklist
• Deliver CCA and FR activities as a leader of the construction process
• Perform a Field Review for wood construction, masonry construction and concrete construction projects.
• Complete checklists and prepare a Field Review report
