Welcome, Ontario Professional Planners Institute!

Ontario Professional Planners Institute

Since launching the course in 2021, hundreds of architecture professionals and firms have made the commitment to enhance their Indigenous cultural awareness and joined us on The Path. We are also proud to announce that starting June 1, 2022, the RAIC will contribute a portion of each course registration to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society, an organization that provides essential services to Residential School Survivors, their families, and those dealing with Intergenerational traumas.

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) is pleased to offer discounted access to The Path – Your Journey Through Indigenous Canada (The Path) for members of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI).

The RAIC entered a collaboration with the NVision Insight Group Inc., in early 2021 to advance our commitment and actions towards reconciliation and the shared journey of healing. This partnership is an activity to enable us to meet the Truth and Reconciliation Commission calls to action, specifically focused on building knowledge and capacity related to Indigenous cultural awareness.

The training that was selected was The Path was created by NVision Insight Group Inc, a majority Indigenous-owned company, and has been developed with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis advisors and reviewers. The program consists of five online modules made up of videos and quizzes that focus on the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples of Canada, the history of Indigenous peoples and their relationship with European settlers, the British Crown, and the Dominion of Canada. This program is on demand and can be done at the registrant’s own pace. Upon completion of the program, a certificate can be downloaded.

The online course is completely video-based, available in English or French, and is the only course of its kind to focus in equal depth on all three Indigenous peoples: First Nations, Inuit and Métis. The course is on demand and takes approximately 4 to 5 hours to complete with a certificate provided upon successful completion.

The RAIC welcomes the opportunity to broaden access to this important educational content to members of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute.

“It is our responsibility to build relationships with Indigenous peoples based on a recognition of rights, respect, cooperation and partnership. Learning more about Indigenous culture, history and languages is crucial to developing a common understanding and opening the door to respectful relationships” states John Brown, FRAIC, President of the RAIC.

“This program is one small step that we can all take together in creating a more culturally safe sector moving forward.”

“On behalf of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute, I wholeheartedly endorse this training as a valuable introductory tool for professional planners to better understand Indigenous perspectives, history, and cultures,” says Paul Lowes, RPP, OPPI President. “OPPI encourages our members to prioritize Indigenous competency training, which is why we’re thrilled to be partnering with RAIC. It’s important, now more than ever, to build our knowledge about the constitutionally protected treaties that uphold the rights of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and begin to reconcile the historic and ongoing wrongs perpetrated against them.”
